BACKGROUND

Writing of the course began in early 1998. The authors, Derek Gowlett, Khethiwe Ngwenya and Tessa Dowling, all former lecturers in the Department of African Languages at the University of Cape Town, drew on their experiences as language teachers to develop a course that is both accessible and academically sound.

The Beginner Course was released in 1999 and was well received both locally and internationally. (The course is currently being used by Yale University.)

The Zulu Advanced Course was completed in 2001. This course covers a wide range of conversational and grammatical material - allowing the learner to progress to an advanced level of communicative competency.

The computer development was managed by Christine Dunckley, co-director of African Voices, who has an Honours in Computer Science and is the developer of Speak Xhosa With Us. Digital designer Anwar McWhite executed the final mix of video, sound, images and interactive activities.
