BACKGROUND
Writing of the course began in early
1998. The authors, Derek Gowlett, Khethiwe Ngwenya and Tessa Dowling, all
former lecturers in the Department of African Languages at the University
of Cape Town, drew on their experiences as language teachers to develop
a course that is both accessible and academically sound. The computer development
was managed by Christine Dunckley who has an Honours in Computer Science
and is the developer of Speak Xhosa With Us and co-director of African
Voices. Digital designers Anwar McWhite and Alistair Hill executed the
final mix of video, sound, images and interactive activities.
