While lecturing in African Languages at the University of Cape Town, Tessa Dowling (PhD) was approached by the University’s multimedia education project to develop a Xhosa multimedia program for beginners. Tessa teamed up with software developer, Christine Dunckley (BSc Hons) and in 1998 the pair launched their company, African Voices, and, simultaneously, the world’s first ever multimedia Xhosa learning package Speak Xhosa With Us.
The printed coursebook included as part of the multimedia CD-ROM package has also been used successfully as a standalone course text, independently of the CD-ROM. It contains comprehensive grammatical explanations and descriptions of pronunciation. The text is fully illustrated, with numerous, fun exercises to help reinforce concepts that have been covered.
The course book comes free as part of the multimedia Speak Xhosa with Us CD-ROM package. Copies can also be purchased separately, but only in bulk orders of 50 or more. Please contact African Voices by email if you would like to place such an order.
