This FAQ
page is based on users' questions and actual technical problems
encountered by users. If you have any questions (and possibly,
answers) that you would like to see on this FAQ, please feel free
to e-mail us with
the details.
1.
Full Screen Video
Question:
My video fills the screen, is very blurred and not all the
controls are showing when it runs. Also, after the video has
played, the programs fonts are all wrong. What's wrong? Answer:
Your computer is running the videos in full-screen format. You
need to change this to enable the program to function correctly.
In Windows 95/98, perform the following operation:
Exit
from the African Voices program.
From
the Task Bar, press Start.
Select
Settings | Control Panel.
From
the Window, select the Multimedia icon.
At
the top of the new Window, select the Video tab.
In
this section, you will see a box labelled Show video.
Click on the word Window, and ensure that the little
drop-down selection box has the words Original size
displayed.
Click
on the OK button, and then close all the windows as usual.
It should NOT be necessary for you to re-start your machine.
2.
Sound Drivers Installed Incorrectly
Question:
When I play the sound files or video files, some play o.k., some
play with a loud brash noise, others have no sound at all. What's
wrong? Answer: The most likely reason is that your
multimedia sound drivers have not been installed correctly. Before
making this assumption, however, perform the following check
(Windows 95/98):
Exit
from the African Voices program.
From
the Task Bar, pressStart.
Select
Settings | ControlPanel.
From
Control Panel, select the System icon.
From
the tabs, select Device Manager.
Double-click
on Sound, video and game controllers to open
it.
If
any device listed there has a yellow exclamation mark (!),
then you have a device problem.
Also,
double click on Other Devices, and look there for yellow
exclamation marks. If there are any there, again, you have a
device problem.
If either
operation indicated a device problem you will need to contact
your own software / hardware support, and tell them exactly which
devices showed errors. When you have corrected the problem, you
will need to re-boot your machine before running any program that
uses sound or video.
3.
Fonts Corrupted – Speak Xhosa With Us
Question:
Not all the words in the buttons and menu options are showing.
What's wrong? Answer: It is most likely that the fonts
on your computer have become corrupted. In order to help us
diagnose the problem more accurately, e-mail us, and tell us which
buttons or items are giving problems. Give us as many examples as
you can, up to a maximum of 5 or 6. From that, we will be able to
tell you which of your fonts are causing problems.
4.
No Video – Speak Zulu With Us
Question:
On the Speak Zulu With Us I don't get any video, only a black box
with a red cross in it! Answer : To run video you need
to have a version of QuickTime installed on your machine. If you
do not already have it installed, you can install it off the Speak
Zulu With Us disc. Instructions on how to install QuickTime are on
the booklet within the cd cover.
5.
Quicktime & Windows 98, 2nd Edition – Speak Zulu With Us
Question:
When trying to play the Speak Zulu With Us CD-ROM I get the
following errors: "Quicktime Streaming failed to load because
of an unknown error", and "Extras failed to load because
version of Quicktime Streaming and Quicktime Streaming Extras do
not match". Answer: It has been ascertained that
the version of Quicktime supplied on the Zulu CD-ROM is not
compatible with Windows 98, 2nd Edition. To overcome this problem
it will be necessary to uninstall the Quicktime version supplied
with the Speak Zulu With Us software, and install the version of
Quicktime supplied with Windows 98, 2nd Edition instead.
6.
Error -34 under Windows 2000 – Speak Zulu With Us
Question:
When running the Speak Zulu With Us CD-ROM on Windows 2000 (or
2000Pro) I get the following error: "Problem opening
c:\document...\user\locals...\temp Error -34". Following this
my system sometimes hangs. Answer: This error is caused
by Macromedia Director, the software in which the Speak Zulu With
Us program is written. Macromedia advises that an error -34 can
occur when Director attempts to copy files to the C: drive, when
that drive is over 3 Gigabytes and unpartitioned. Unfortunately
they do not have any patch for this error and the only solution is
to partition the drive into smaller segments and install and run
the Speak Zulu With Us software on a segment that is less than 3
Gigabytes in size.

Installation Notes – Speak Zulu With Us (Advanced)
Windows
2000 Installation: There is a minor glitch in the installation
of the Speak Zulu With Us (Intermediate to Advanced) software,
when installing under Windows 2000. Currently our Zulu software is
not able to provide the recording facility when running under
Windows NT, as a result of the third party recording software that
we are using. In the Advanced program, we have made it possible to
use the Zulu software on NT, by disabling this recording feature
when running under NT. Our installation program recognises Windows
2000 as Windows NT (as it is a little out of date) and therefore
automatically disables the recording facility. The recording
feature will however work under Windows 2000, and thus it requires
that you simply turn the facility back on in order to get it to
function. This is achieved by selecting the Preferences button off
the Main Menu of the Speak Zulu With Us program and setting the
Disable Sound Recording preference to False.
8.
Error – Requires 3MB of Virtual Memory to run – Speak
Zulu With Us, Advanced
Running
under Windows XP & 2000:
This error occurs when customers are running our Zulu program
under Windows XP or Windows 2000. It is caused by conflicts
between Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 (With 1GB or more memory)
and the version of Macromedia Director we used to create our Zulu
program. There is a workaround to remove the error, by setting the
virtual memory to a lesser value. For instructions on how to
achieve this see 3MB Error Support Notes.
9.
Error – Message from Windows XP system relating to the path
of file config.nt or autoexec.nt.
See
Support Notes provided by
Microsoft.
10.
Video not available – Speak Xhosa With Us (Vista)
Question:
When trying to play a video in Speak Xhosa With Us on Windows
Vista, I get the message “Video not available – cannot
find ‘vids:IV32’ decompressor”. Answer:
Your system does not have the Ligos Indeo Codec, which is
obtainable from
http://www.free-codecs.com/Indeo_Codec_download.htm.
Once this codec has been installed, you should not have any
further problems running video in our application.
