MIGRATION AND SOCIAL PROTECTION NEEDS SURVEY

From November 2003 to February 2004 African Voices was employed by Monash University (Melbourne, Australia) to co-conduct a household survey on migration and social protection needs in selected Cape Town townships. The survey was sponsored by the university's Institute for the Study of Global Movements.

The survey formed part of a larger research project which looks at the social and linguistic consequences of migration, and the support migrants obtain from the family, the community and the (welfare) state. The larger research project investigates these questions in three countries: Australia, China and South Africa.

African Voices with its team of researchers - Thami Makubalo, Nkululeko Mabandla, Nosipho Tshabane and Nandi Tshabane - surveyed 250 households (over 2000 people) who had migrated to Cape Town in the last ten years. The areas we visited were: Imizamo Yethu (Hout Bay), Ilitha Park (Khayelitsha), Langa and Gugulethu.

Chief researchers from Monash University were:
Associate Professor Brett Inder
Professor Chris Nyland
Associate Professor John Madden
Dr. Pushkar Maitra
Dr. Ana Deumert
Dr. Helmut Heinze.

Professor Inder and Dr Deumert visited South Africa during the survey to supervise and conduct a number of interviews.

If you have questions or concerns about the research you can contact Assoc. Prof. Brett Inder. You can also contact Dr. Marilyn Lucas (tel: +27 11 9504087) who is the Research Coordinator at Monash's South African Campus in Johannesburg.
